ATMO, the Swedish film collective is well on the way to revolutionising the European documentary film. Their films are young, hip, fast, direct and pertinent. Erik Gandini is the standard bearer in ATMO and the person behind the acclaimed documentary about the global consumer society, 'Surplus' (CPH:DOX 2005). In the spring of 2003 Gandini and his companion, Tarek Saleh, went to Guantanamo to investigate what is really going on at the secretive military base where alleged terrorists have been incarcerated without being charged since 2001. The result, 'Gitmo', is a serious yet entertaining film about the Guantanamo. The military personnel at the base do everything they can to convince them that everything is above board, legal and cosy - both for the soldiers and the prisoners. Gandini and Saleh dig deeper and end up on a ramatic journey that brings them to the entagon, Stockholm, Bucharest, and Abu Graib prison in Iraq. A frightening world is revealed.
