Documentaries are rarely launched as murder mysteries, but that's the case here. The role of the victim is played by General Motor's EV1. In 1996 the EV1 was launched as a fast, environmentally-friendly electric car. It could not be bought, only leased. When the lease contracts expired, and the happy drivers wanted to renew, General Motors confiscated the cars and shredded them into thousands of pieces.
"It's like an act of cannibalism," is how one of the film's contributors describes this apparently strange course of events. The director Chris Paine is not looking for a single culprit. Instead his investigation includes the car industry, oil industry, politicians, engineers, car enthusiasts and consumers.
Along the way he makes a number of interesting discoveries, including the fact that today fans of the e-car include not only predictable leftwing film stars and "tree huggers", but also neo-conservatives who are not exactly renowned as champions of the environment. 'Who Killed the Electric Car?' is not only entertaining but also highly relevant in an era of soaring petrol prices, global warming and war in the oil-rich Middle East.
